How to draw a bubble letter D

1. Pencil a straight stem and one big half-circle bulging to the right.
2. Outline the whole shape so the stem and the curve become one fat letter.
3. Leave a single hole shaped like a half-moon, flat on the left.
4. Round the two left corners generously, since square corners on a D make it look like a block letter.

The tricky part

A bubble D easily turns into an O. Keep the left side of the hole straight, even while the outside of the letter is round.

Lowercase bubble d

The lowercase d is a round bowl with a tall stem on the right, a mirror of b. Children mix these up, so a pair of b and d on the same wall is worth labelling.

Bubble letter D sizes and page counts

Letter height here is the height of the capital, the number you would measure on the wall. The width follows from the shape of the D, which in the Bubble style is about as wide as a typical capital. Page counts assume a 10 mm printer margin and the orientation that needs fewer sheets.

The largest D that fits on a single Letter sheet is 8 inches tall, printed portrait. For a bulletin board, 6 to 8 inches reads from the back of a classroom; for a door or a banner, 10 to 12 inches.
